The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Brin Carstens, unveiled a spectacular mosaic at Penwith School in Fishermead. On Friday 15th September, the Mayor met with staff, children and two artists who collaborated in a project that spanned seven weeks to produce a mosaic some 3 metres long for the front of the school. School staff applied for a grant from the Ernest Cook trust and children drew up designs for the mosaics. Artists, Anastasia-Lee Harmony and Siobhan Fitzpatrick, both Fine Art students at the University of Northampton, then transformed the children’s ideas into the mosaics that now grace the school frontage and classroom doors. At Meadfurlong School a total of 76 children attended and at Willen School a total of 52. Children were aged between 6 and 14 years
The Parish also funded ‘Milton Keynes Dons’ to run football coaching and ‘Milton Keynes Lions’ to run basketball coaching at Meadfurlong and Willen School. Basketball coaching ended in a Tournament at the Xscape on Saturday 9th September 2006. These courses were run once a week over five weeks and flyers advertising the training sessions were sent to all schools in each ward. Cllr Anne Creed who organised the activities said “it was a joy seeing all the children participate in the activities”
During the long school summer holidays Campbell Park Parish Council organised six fun days, football and basketball coaching for the young people of the parish.
This Six Fun Days were a real hit with local youngsters. Campbell Park Parish Council employed the services of Milton Keynes Play Association and invited Thames Valley Police and Bucks Fire Brigade along. Each of the parish’s wards had a day of fun, and flyers advertising the events were sent to all schools in each ward. Entertainment included a bouncy castle, water slides, art & crafts, sports activities, face and henna painting. The children also enjoyed the chance to explore inside the police vehicles.
